Year 12 Film : Cover Work for Nina on Tuesday

Good evening. Just wanted to let you know that I won't be around for Film in the morning as I am going to be interviewing new candidates for a Media and Film teacher post. I would like you to use your FS2 Case Study work on Hollywood and the support materials on Will Ferrell in the link below to answer Q1 in Section A of the FM2 exam paper:

http://www.wjec.co.uk/uploads/publications/5797.pdf

You may use your two hour lesson time on this and submit it to me for marking by FRIDAY at the latest. You can come in and use my lesson time or find some other study time to put your knowledge into action. We will finish watching American Beauty next week and before then, can you read the links on my last posting - American Beauty - Look closer?
Missing you already x

Year 12 Film Studies Blogging - A gentle reminder!

You should have used or be using the Half Term break to get completely up-to-date with your FM2 blogging. You should have four entries by now, which are:

1) Is Hollywood film purely a commercial commodity? Discuss, with reference to the documentary shown in class and case-study on Hollywood.
2) Case study on the marketing of a recent blockbuster film, including research into the film studio which made it.
3) The American Dream (1): What is it, what you think of it and some examples of its representation in films that you have seen.
4) Representations of the American Dream in 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (Leanne's Class only)

Happy Half Term, Happy Blogging!

Year 12 Film Studies - FM2 Hollywood Studio Online Advertising

I found this interesting little article on the 'Movie Marketing Madness' blog which you should all check out on a regular basis. This eMarketer report on the spreading of clips as a promotional strategy for upcoming films is interesting as an insight on the targeting process. But the real bit of news coming from it is that studios spent $1.01 billion on online ads in 2008, a 34.6 percent increase over 2007’s $754 million. Projected spending in 2009 and beyond slows somewhat from that pace, hovering between 23 and 25 percent for the most part. But you’ll see that online’s percentage of the total studio ad spending continues to increase in that time, rising to an expected 13.2 percent by 2012.

This does appear to be just paid advertising and therefore likely doesn’t take into account other marketing efforts like website design, publicity efforts to online media and other initiatives. It would be interesting to see what the total online media spending looks like.

A/S Film Studies - Hollywood Case Study Nina's Class

I hope the editing of your short films is going well in i-movie. Gerry has agreed to come and do a session on Final Cut Pro next week to help you bring your creative ideals to life with some 'Jazz Hands' snazzy effects!
As you know, your Hollywood case study research is due on Tuesday. I have seen what Jake, Tara and Ruby have been up to but am not sure what the rest of you are up to? I have not received any blog links from anyone else so if you are creating a Film blog can you e-mail me your url address to:

I am off work feeling poorly and a bit sorry for myself. I hate daytime TV so have spent a bit of time in my cosy bed sourcing useful stuff for you. Here are a couple of useful links that might help you research the institutional aspect of your case study:

This blog focuses on 'Distribution' facts:
http://moviedistributionfacts.wordpress.com/2008/06/03/using-a-study-of-popular-movie-audiences-to-promote-your-film/

This site explores Hollywood studios as Oligopolies 'multi-national corporations' that dominate media output. Some interesting stuff especially in the Movie Industry section.

This site is great for accessing 'fan-sites' where you can find loads of great marketing and publicity for your case study film+ facts/figures to do with box office sales and studio info.

Oh and Jake, I think Sarah Jessica Parker launched a perfume called 'Lovely' when 'Sex and the City' was released. I saw an ad on TV for it last night and it reminded me of our conversation.

Thank you all for your efforts in Tuesday's lesson. Despite not taking his badge, Mr OFSTED was very impressed with the class.
See you on Tuesday. x

A/S Film Studies - FM2 Film Marketing Case Study

Hello Film-noodlers. Welcome to 'The Noodle'. I am going to begin posting information for you on the blog including homework and links, and of course some movies and clips.

You have been working on your FM2 case studies undertaking a detailed study into the marketing and promotion of a Hollywood film of your choosing. Your collection of artefacts can take two forms -

a. A dedicated FM2 blog where you can post all your research, videos, trailers, links etc.

or

b. A paper based file where you keep all of your research in a print form.

Ideally I would like all of you to create a Film Studies blog where you can keep all of your film work from here on (including all your preparatory work for FM2). Your Hollywood case study needs to show evidence of the following:

1. Research into the studio/s involved in the production and distribution of your chosen film. What questions does this raise?

2. What marketing, promotion and merchandise deals have you discovered? What do these say about the target audience/ the ideology of the film and the company behind it?

3. How successful was the movie in terms of box-office ratings both here and abroad? What was it's USP? What led to its success?

In short I want you to find out as much information about your chosen film from the initial stages of production through to marketing, distribution, exhibition and audience reception (some primary research) and exploration of the REVIEWS process and the impact this has on reception. You will then use all of your collected material to construct an essay on the main thrust of this examination - the relationship between PRODUCERS and AUDIENCES. Here is an example of the WJEC FM2 exam paper for you to see how this project relates:

I have also found some really useful links to support you with the Hollywood case study below.

This case study work will need to be completed in readiness to complete the essay by Tuesday 9th December 2008. 2 WEEKS!
Good Luck
